Pour le père de l’Encyclopédie, ces deux penseurs ont fait preuve d’un grand courage philosophique en payant de leur vie leur fidélité à la recherche de la vérité. Comment justifier cela quand on est athée et qu’on ne croit pas en l’au-delà ? Défendant un matérialisme confiant dans le jugement de la postérité et le progrès de l’humanité, Diderot soutient cette position contre les sarcasmes de ses amis Naigeon et Falconet, qui, eux, refusent de prendre un tel risque, en se réfugiant derrière un matérialisme cynique et individualiste. For the father of the Encyclopedia, those two thinkers manifested a high philosophical courage in paying with their lives their steadfast search for truth. How justify that when you are an atheist and do not believe in after life? By vindicating a materialism trusting in posterity’s judgment and mankind’s progress, Diderot upholds this position against the sarcasms of his friends Naigeon and Falconet who, for their part, ruled out such a risk, taking shelter behind a cynical, individualistic materialism. |
