| الوصف: | La signalisation maritime dans l’Antiquité est associée aux grands phares de l’époque hellénistique et romaine pourtant ces édifices spectaculaires et peu nombreux ne sont pas les seuls dispositifs. Une importante documentation épigraphique, iconographique et littéraire incite régulièrement à interpréter des vestiges de tours non défensives ou de plateformes à l’extrémité des jetées comme des phares antiques. La signalisation d’un port n’implique pas les mêmes aménagements que ceux employés pour la matérialisation d’une embouchure ou d’un cap. L’efficacité de la signalisation d’un port ne dépend pas de la hauteur de ces fanaux mais davantage de la précision de leur implantation. C’est le cas des tours à feux, des balises et des fanaux. Ce sont des constructions qui appartiennent au complexe portuaire et apportent une aide au marin, après l’approche des terres, dans la phase stratégique d’entrée au port. La diversité des formes et des emplacements retenus interroge sur le fonctionnement d’une activité complexe et stratégique. Aid to maritime navigation in antiquity is usually thought of in terms of the great lighthouses of the Hellenistic and Roman Periods; however, these spectacular and rather rare structures were not the only installations. A sizeable epigraphic, iconographic and literary documentation commonly suggests that the remains of a non-defensive tower or a platform at the end of a jetty should be interpreted as an ancient beacon. The indication of a port does not imply the same arrangements as those for marking a river mouth or a cape. The efficacy of a harbour marker does not depend on the height of the beacon but more on the precision of its positioning. This is the case for fire towers, beacons and landmarks. These constructions are part of a port complex and provide aid to the sailor after the approach to land in the strategic phase of entry to the port. The variety of chosen forms and emplacements are a reflection of this complex and strategic activity. |
