Le zoologue Ernst Haeckel (1843-1919) fut l’un des partisans les plus précoces et les plus ardents du darwinisme en Allemagne. Cette figure très influente dans le champ culturel au tournant du siècle est particulièrement remarquable du fait qu’il développa, à partir des théories biologiques de l’évolution, un vaste ensemble théorique qui déborda vite le domaine scientifique. Ses recherches en botanique, zoologie, physiologie et embryologie s’étendirent à la philosophie, à la politique et aux arts. Elles aboutirent à une esthétique personnelle et une rhétorique visuelle. Haeckel se distingue en ce qu’il associe dans son œuvre, et parfois au sein d’un même livre, des démonstrations scientifiques, des visions philosophiques, des figurations artistiques, des formulations littéraires et des idées politiques en se présentant toujours comme un homme de science. Dans les contributions réunies ici, on l’aborde comme un créateur au carrefour des disciplines et aussi au carrefour des discours, des domaines, scientifique et artistique et d’autres encore. Il se trouve à ce carrefour non seulement parce que les études réunies dans ce dossier l’y placent mais d’abord parce qu’il s’y est lui-même placé par sa pratique. Il constitue donc un objet privilégié pour une approche scientifique interdisciplinaire telle que nous l’essayons dans ce numéro. The zoologist Ernst Haeckel (1843-1919) was one of the earliest and most ardent advocates of Darwinism in Germany. But it is another trait that defines this figure – vastly influential at the turn of the century: Building on biological theories of evolution, he developed a whole theoretical cosmos that soon grew beyond the scientific domain. His researches in botany, zoology, physiology, and embryology extended into the fields of philosophy, politics and arts, and resulted in a specific aesthetics and visual rhetoric. Haeckel particularly associated in his work, and sometimes in the same book, scientific demonstrations, philosophical visions, artistic and literary representations, and political ideas, while always presenting himself as a man of science. The essays assembled here consider him as a thinker at the crossroads of the disciplines, and also at the crossroads of the discourses – scientific and artistic and others more. He is at this crossroads not only because our perspective places him there, but first because he has placed himself there by his practice. He is therefore a privileged object for the interdisciplinary approach we are trying here.
