| الوصف: | In questo articolo consideriamo il Tempio Rotondo sotto due aspetti che evidenzierebbero il suo carattere ibrido. Il primo aspetto è quello di luogo di culto imperiale della nuova dinastia severiana che è messa in relazione con i predecessori; il secondo, che presentiamo in via ipotetica, è quello di luogo di culto delle divinità orientali Sol e Magna Mater. In particolare, la grande corte rettangolare antistante alla cella richiama tradizioni architettoniche orientali. La cupola visibile parzialmente al di sopra del pronao supera il modello e le suggestioni derivate dal Pantheon. Essa richiama altre rotonde, quali l’Asklepieion di Pergamo o il «Tempio di Venere» a Baalbek, dove già osserviamo la completa autonomia della pianta centrale. Il tempio a nostro parere rifletterebbe una tendenza eclettica che segna il regno di Eliogabalo, che ne ha iniziato la costruzione. Vediamo una manifestazione di tale tendenza anche nel Tempio del Sole sul Palatino. In questo edificio l’imperatore aveva fatto radunare non solo la pietra nera di Emesa, ma anche quella di Cibele del tempio palatino della Magna Mater, e altri importanti segni legati alle origini di Roma. Riteniamo possibile che anche nel Tempio Rotondo la colonia ostiense abbia riposto importanti significati e messaggi. In this article we consider the Round Temple under two aspects that highlight its hybrid character. The first aspect is that of an imperial place of worship of the new Severian dynasty that is related to its predecessors; the second, which we hypothetically present, is that of a place of worship for the eastern divinities Sol and Magna Mater. In particular, the large rectangular courtyard in front of the cell recalls oriental architectural traditions. The dome partially visible above the pronaos exceeds the model and the suggestions derived from the Pantheon. It recalls other roundabouts, such as the Asklepieion of Pergamon or the «Temple of Venus» in Baalbek, where we already observe the complete autonomy of the central plan. The temple in our opinion could reflect an eclectic tendency that marks the reign of Heliogabalus, who started its construction. We see a manifestation of this tendency also in the Temple of the Sun on the Palatine Hill. In this building the emperor had made to gather not only the black stone of Emesa, but also that of Cybele of the Palatine temple of the Magna Mater, and other important signs connected to the origins of Rome. We believe it possible that even in the Round Temple the Ostian colony has placed important meanings and messages. |
