| الوصف: | Questo contributo prende le mosse da una recente scoperta : la presenza, nella decorazione frontonale del tempio di Roma e Augusto a Ostia, di due figure di Capricorni, che sono ricostruiti in maniera alternativa da quella finora proposta. Si esamina quindi in breve la bibliografia relativa ai motivi della scelta del Capricorno come segno zodiacale di Augusto, illustrandone tutte le caratteristiche che lo rendono il segno più adatto a quel momento storico. A tale fine sono indagati sia gli aspetti più genericamente astrologici sia quelli più puntualmente politici e dinastici, che in questo ambito sono di maggiore interesse. Nella seconda parte, si propone una datazione più circostanziata del tempio, che può contribuire, nonostante l’assenza di dati epigrafici, a sfatare alcune credenze sulla datazione del culto imperiale fuori dell’Vrbs. In tale ottica il tempio ostiense assume, all’interno degli edifici per il culto imperiale, un ruolo importante sia per la precocità del suo impianto, sia per l’elaborazione di alcuni modelli formali ed iconografici di grande impatto e successivo sviluppo. Through the recent discovery of two fragments belonging to two Capricorni, part of the pedimental decoration of the temple of Rome and Augustus in Ostia, the paper suggests an alternative reconstruction of the pediments’ iconography. Firstly, it offers a brief survey of the literature dealing with the reasons behind the choice of the Capricorn as Augustus’ sign of the zodiac and elucidates all the features that make this sign the most suitable one in that historical period. To this aim, it investigates the astrological aspects of the Capricorn as well as its political and dynastic relevance, which is the focus of the argument. In a second time, it suggests a more precise dating for the construction of the temple than the one available so far. While epigraphical evidence is lacking, the architectural, stylistic and iconographical study of the aedes contributes to dismiss some widely held views about the imperial cult and its starting in Italy outside Rome. Moreover, the temple is shown to have played a prominent role in the creation of iconographical models, which turned out to be widespread in the imperial time. |
