الوصف: O objetivo deste artigo é refletir acerca da historiografia de Charles Boxer (1904-2000), com destaque às obras dedicadas à América portuguesa e ao Atlântico Sul nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Embora vários outros textos sejam considerados, o centro da análise recai principalmente nos seguintes livros: Salvador de Sá and the Struggle for Brazil and Angola (1952), The Dutch in Brazil (1957), e The Golden Age of Brazil (1962). O artigo também se propõe a observar a maneira como Charles Boxer descreve o Brasil colonial como parte do império português. São ainda objeto de análise e reflexão os diálogos de Boxer com os historiadores brasileiros e portugueses do seu tempo, bem como o seu legado historiográfico.
The purpose of this article is to reflect on the historical writing of Charles Boxer (1904-2000), with emphasis on his works about Portuguese America and South Atlantic in the 17th and 18th centuries. Although other texts will be considered, the analysis focuses primarily on the following books: Salvador de Sá and the Struggle for Brazil and Angola (1952), The Dutch in Brazil (1957), and The Golden Age of Brazil (1962). This article also intends to observe how Charles Boxer describes Colonial Brazil as part of the Portuguese empire. Furthermore, this article analyses how Boxer interacted with other Brazilian and Portuguese historians of his time, and evaluates the relevance and the repercussion of Boxer’s work in contemporary historiography.
Le but de cet article est de réfléchir à l’historiographie de Charles Boxer (1904-2000), en mettant l’accent sur ses travaux sur l’Amérique portugaise et l’Atlantique Sud aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Bien que d’autres textes soient examinés, l’analyse se concentre sur les livres suivants : Salvador de Sá and the Struggle for Brazil and Angola (1952), The Dutch in Brazil (1957), The Golden Age of Brazil (1962). Cet article a également pour objectif d’observer comment Charles Boxer décrit le Brésil colonial comme une partie de l’Empire portugais. De plus, cet article tente d’évaluer la pertinence et la répercussion du travail de Boxer dans l’historiographie brésilienne.
