| الوصف: | In questo articolo viene analizzata l’attività diplomatica intercorsa tra Roma e la Bulgaria tra il 1190 e il 1213, durante il pontificato di Innocenzo III, attraverso l’esame delle difficoltà cui andarono incontro i legati, sia quelli pontifici che quelli bulgari, nel corso delle loro missioni. I contatti tra il regno di Bulgaria e la Santa Sede furono spesso difficoltosi, non tanto per la distanza o per le condizioni della rete viaria ma per l’opposizione dell’impero bizantino e del regno d’Ungheria, entrambi intenzionati a sabotare le trattative tra i sovrani bulgari e il pontefice : i legati vennero arrestati, minacciati, maltrattati, detenuti in pessime condizioni, anche se fortunatamente nessuno di loro perse la vita. Eppure, le disavventure che patirono non impedirono loro di portare a termine con successo le loro missioni. This paper focuses on the diplomatic activity between Rome and Bulgaria between 1190 and 1213, during the pontificate of Innocent III, analysing the difficulties experienced by the legates, both pontifical and Bulgarian, during their missions. The contacts between the kingdom of Bulgaria and the Holy See were often difficult, not because of the distance or of the state of the roads but because of the opposition of the Byzantine empire and of the kingdom of Hungary, both willing to sabotage the negotiations between the Bulgarian sovereigns and the Pope : the legates were arrested, threatened, maltreated, detained in terrible conditions, although luckily no one lost his life. Nevertheless, their misadventures did not prevent them from carrying out successfully their missions. |
