| الوصف: | Dans son ouvrage A Collection of Emblemes (1635), que le poète et pamphlétaire anglais George Wither prétend destiner à des lecteurs de culture modeste, il affirme que ces derniers, prétendument hermétiques aux ouvrages sérieux d’édification morale, pourraient néanmoins trouver goût au sien, dans lequel figure, en annexe, un jeu de loterie censé capter leur attention afin de la diriger ensuite vers les leçons contenues dans les emblèmes. Cependant, si l’on s’attarde quelque peu sur l’ouvrage dans son ensemble, c’est un projet didactique autrement plus original et créatif qui en émane ; en effet, par le biais de stratégies pédagogiques pratiques et ingénieuses, Wither parvient à donner accès à ses lecteurs, d’une part, à des notions philosophiques pourtant complexes, et, d’autre part, au langage même de la symbolique, qui demeure encore, à cette époque, l’apanage d’une petite élite, le plus souvent aristocratique. In his Collection of Emblemes (1635), George Wither, a notoriously controversial and prolific English poet and pamphleteer, claims to have composed his work mainly to make stern moral lessons more palatable to “common readers” through the use of beautiful engravings and a lottery game, which, or so he claims, was a necessary addition to the work to grab the attention of those who are both most in need of, and most reluctant to, being educated on such matters. If one looks beyond his patronising remarks, however, his didactic project appears to be much broader, and much more creative, than meets the eye, and seeks to endow the reader with the means to navigate complex philosophical concepts and to gain access to symbolic discourse, which, at the time, was still emblematic of strict social hierarchy, and the privilege of a select, usually aristocratic, few. |
