| الوصف: | Cet article présente une analyse du recours aux bêtabloquants en vue de gérer le stress de la performance au sein de la communauté musicienne. Cette analyse repose sur une enquête ethnographique d’une durée de quatre mois, réalisée dans une faculté de musique classique québécoise en 2016. Mobilisant le cadre théorique proposé par le concept de « pharmaceuticalisation » (Collin, 2016), l’article décrit la manière par laquelle les bêtabloquants sont perçus dans le milieu à la fois comme faisant l’objet d’un tabou et d’un rejet affirmé par les musicien·ne·s et comme un remède attirant et potentiellement bénéfique pour les interprètes. Il y est avancé que les bêtabloquants, qu’ils soient ou non consommés, participent à l’élaboration des normes de performances, renforcent l’injonction à l’excellence et soulèvent des enjeux identitaires chez les musicien·ne·s. This article presents an analysis of the use of beta-blockers to manage stage fright (or so-called performance anxiety) in the music community. Data presented in this paper are based on a four-month ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a Quebec classical music faculty in 2016. Mobilizing the theoretical framework proposed by the concept of “pharmaceuticalization” (Collin, 2016), the paper describes the way in which beta-blockers are perceived in the community as both taboo and rejected by musicians and as an attractive and potentially effective remedy for performers. It is argued that beta-blockers, whether they are consumed or not, contribute to the development of performance standards, reinforce the injunction to excellence and challenge the identity and the sense of legitimacy among musicians. |
