| الوصف: | Les monts Tumuc Humac ont fasciné des générations d’aventuriers. Mais la nature géographique de ces fameux « monts » est pour le moins douteuse. Intensément présentes et vécues pour les uns, inexistantes pour d’autres, « les Tumuc Humac » sont des montagnes mythiques, c’est-à-dire un espace géographique qui convoie plusieurs niveaux de significations. Dans ces conditions, à quoi reviendrait leur traversée ? A partir d’une recherche bibliographique mais aussi des données recueillies sur le terrain durant plusieurs expéditions, cet article explore les aspects historiques ou géo-historiques et territoriaux que cette question permet d’aborder. Il expose en premier lieu le contexte historique de l’apparition des Tumuc Humac, puis leur transformation en une zone d’accès contrôlée (et les difficultés de ce contrôle) avant de proposer quelques réflexions sur leur configuration topographique et sur ses implications en termes de déplacement. Car traverser les Tumuc Humac est possible, toute la difficulté consistant à choisir le bon chemin. As montanhas deTumucumaque fascinaram gerações de exploradores. Mas a natureza geográfica dessas é bastante duvidosa. Alguns as apontam como uma experiência real enquanto outros até negam a sua existência. Os montes do Tumucumaque são, portanto, míticos, e encerram ao mesmo tempo diversos níveis de significação. Nesse contexto, o que seria “atravessar o Tumucumaque”? A partir de informações históricas e de dados coletados em campo durante expedições nessa região, este artigo busca explorar os aspectos geográficos e históricos contidos nessa pergunta. O texto aborda, em primeiro lugar, o contexto histórico do surgimento dos montes do Tumucumaque. Em segundo lugar, mostra como foram transformados em uma área duplamente controlada, do ponto de vista administrativo, por ser uma fronteira internacional, e do ponto de vista ambiental, por ter sido transformada em dois parques nacionais. Finalmente, apresenta reflexões sobre a configuração topográfica da região e suas implicações para as expedições. Afinal, atravessar os Tumucumaque é possível, embora a dificuldade seja a escolha do caminho. Generations of explorers have been fascinated by The Tumuc Humac mounts, or montanhas Tumucumaque in Portuguese. The real geographical nature of such “mounts”, however, is rather dubious since if they correspond to real-life experiences for some, other consider that they do not even exist. They seem to correspond more to a myth, carrying several levels of interpretation at the same time. Given this context, what does “crossing the Tumuc Humac” mean? Using historical documents as well as field experience of this region, we explore in this article the different historical and geographical aspects conveyed by this question. We first expose the historical context in which the Tumuc Humac appear in the scientific literature. Then we describe how they were turned in a controlled-access area, and the difficulty for such control to be efficient. Last, we reflect on the topographical configuration of this region and its implication in terms of expeditions. For it is possible to cross the Tumuc Humac, finding the right way being the real difficulty. |
