| الوصف: | À partir de l'exemple d'une agronomie grecque du xviie siècle, cet article propose de montrer que la perception du cosmos et les systèmes de mesure du temps dans les sociétés rurales méditerranéennes sont le produit d'un brassage entre la science ancienne (astrologie et astronomie) et les différentes formes de sa vulgarisation à travers les siècles : agronomies, calendriers ruraux, encyclopédies diverses, etc. Outre le rôle des monastères, ce brassage est réalisé dans une grande mesure par les élites sociales et économiques mi-rurales et mi-citadines du monde méditerranéen. Une histoire des mesures du temps dans le monde rural peut, ainsi, contribuer à déchiffrer non seulement le profil social et économique des élites, mais aussi leur implication dans l'économie dcs villes méditerranéennes aux temps modernes. "The Moon under the Earth": A Contribution to the History of Time Measurement in Rural Societies of the Modern Mediterranean World This study begins with an example from a 17th century Greek agronomist, and goes on to show that the perception of the Cosmos and the systems of measuring time in Mediterranean rural societies are the result of weaving the science of antiquity (astrology, astronomy) with various sorts of popularization across the centuries, such as agronomics, rural calendars, various encyclopedies and so forth. The contribution of monasteries aside, this weaving process was largely the work of the semi-rural, semi-urban social and economic elites of the Mediterranean world. A history of time measurements in rural milieu contributes not only to a broadened understanding of the elites' social and economic profile, but also to discerning the effects of time measurments on the economy of Mediterranean cities in modern times. |
