| الوصف: | This essay outlines and contends with the problem of the absence of Armenians from Ottoman photographic history, with a distinct concern being that history’s failure to consider the provincial photography that constituted the bulk of Ottoman Armenian image production. This study takes a school photograph from Kharpert province as the point of embarkation for a consideration of the themes and purposes of provincial photography. It is particularly concerned with historical context, and investigates the late social history of Kharpert through the lives and work of the photograph’s central sitter, the writer Tlgadintsi, and its makers, the Soursourians. It considers how photographic production related to this social history and grew out of specific community needs during a time of mass migration and massacre, being a means of tying people together in the present and looking forwards with hope for the future. Cet article interroge l’absence des acteurs arméniens dans l’histoire de la photographie ottomane, et en particulier l’incapacité de celle-ci à prendre en considération la part majeure prise par les photographes de province dans l’ensemble de la production photographique arménienne ottomane. Une photo de classe prise à Kharpert sert ici de point de départ à une réflexion sur les thématiques et les motivations sociales de la photographie dans les provinces ottomanes. L’article prête une attention particulière au contexte historique, interrogeant l’histoire sociale de Kharpert à travers la vie et l’œuvre de l’un des personnages centraux de la photographie étudiée, l’écrivain Tlgadintsi, et ceux des auteurs de la photographie en question, les frères Soursourian. Dans une perspective d’histoire sociale, il s’agit de mettre en lumière le lien entre la production photographique et l’affirmation de nouveaux besoins parmi les communautés arméniennes ottomanes provinciales. Dans une période marquée par l’importance sociale des migrations et ponctuée de violences extrêmes commises contre les Arméniens, la photographie apparaît en effet comme un liant entre les individus dans le présent, mais aussi comme un véhicule matériel des espoirs placés dans un avenir meilleur. |
