الوصف: Tommaso Ceva SJ. (1648-1737), teacher of Mathematics and Rhetoric at the Brera collegium in Milan, was the author of a De natura gravium and varions other works in poetry and prose. In the short poem Philosophia novo-antiqua he attacked Gassendi’s atomism and Descartes’ physics (the materialistic outcome of which he anticipated with fear) on the basis of a theory which attempted to conciliate the Aristotelian tradition with Galilean teachings. This study examines the main points of criticism which Ceva made against corpuscular doctrines – with particular reference to the theory of movement – and considers at length the debate (highly polemical at times) which he conducted on this subject with G. Grandi – a teacher at the University of Pisa and an attentive observer of the most innovative currents in European science between the end of the 17th century and the early decades of the 18th.
