| الوصف: | Starting from Claude Lefort’s 1976 reading of Etienne de La Boétie’s Discours sur la Servitude Volontaire, the text observes how Lefort’s reflection on adherence to totalitarianism is nourished from then on by the notion of voluntary servitude. It focuses in particular on the inconceivability of the notion of voluntary servitude, on the relationship between the desire for freedom and the desire for servitude, and on the question of whether all individuals are equally prone to falling under the spell of the One. The paper focalizes Lefort’s developments on the nature of the democratic regime as a regime that is held in indeterminacy, and the relationship of democracy with totalitarianism. Finally, it proposes to try to think, from the intersection of the interrogation on voluntary servitude and the Machiavellian topos of the division of the “grandi” and the people that we find in the Lefortian reading of La Boétie, in what way Lefort’s interrogation opens the way to think distinct figures, different modalities of this reversal of freedom into servitude. |
