The essay focuses on female burials to be found in Rome - some of them still existing, some others nowadays lost - dating from the half of XVth century up to the Sack of Rome (1527). Floor slabs are mostly used at that period, and the typologies as much the quality of the work is quite various (tomb of Caterina di Bosnia in Santa Maria in Aracoeli and the one belonging to Elisabetta Orsini Anguillara (1496) in San Giovanni in Laterano' cloister) ; sometimes the wife is buried next to her husband (tombs of Stefano Pierleoni and Lucrezia Rosi (1513) in San Nicola in Carcere). The use of the wall-monuments enriched with sculptures is less common, and usually adopted for church men and noblemen during XVth century. The wall funerary monuments belonging to Maddalena Orsini (post 1474) ) in San Salvatore in Lauro and that one of Costanza Ammannati (1477), in the cloister of Sant’Agostino, are here examined. Among the wall funerary monuments there are some of them strictly influenced by ancient art such as the tomb of Stefano Satri and Maddalena degli Arlotti and their son Giovan Battista, in Sant’Omobono, dating ca 1483 ; in this tomb one find a copy of an antique relief to be found at that time in the Santacroce. Also the Beatrice and Lavinia Ponzetti's funerary monuments, in Santa Maria della Pace, exhibit funeral effigies of the two young girls, both of them realised into two classical clypeus. |
