Mais ses particularités défient les modèles établis : les expériences migratoires multiples de ses nouveaux résidents, l’hétérogénéité de sa population en perpétuel mouvement, un développement urbain polycentrique, un « rêve californien » ambigu nourrissent un mélange racial et social qui pourrait bien être explosif, à moins que les Angelinos, qui prennent conscience de leur spécificité, ne parviennent à s’unir sous une nouvelle identité collective. As the privileged destination of the new immigration, Los Angeles could be compared to New York at the turn of the century because of its international economic role and ethnic diversity. However, the metropolis challenges all existing models: the various migration patterns of its new residents, the heterogeneity of its constantly moving population, a polycentric urban development, an ambiguous “California dream” nourish a social and ethnie brew that is highly explosive; yet the Angelinos are increasingly aware of their specificity and of the need to unite thanks to a new collective identity. |
