The article presents an overview of the main scientific and popular science publications, concepts and views regarding the destruction of the Hetman's capital Baturyn by the Russian army in 1708 in the context of the Ukrainian-Russian discussion 2008-2022. The overview included scientific research, as well as Russian and pro-Russian Ukrainian propaganda journalism. The analysis of these materials allows a deeper understanding of the formation of the ideological basis for the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. The study was conducted in order to familiarize the Western European audience with the gradual decolonization of the Ukrainian historical narrative.
