مستخلص: The school districts of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania State University formed the Computer-Assisted Instruction Consortium to develop and evaluate two high school mathematics programs utilizing the medium of computer-assisted instruction. The first 18 months of the project (until fall of 1969) was spent in curriculum development activities. A full-year trial of the materials provided feedback for course revision and blocking of exercises into units. During the school year 1970-71 the Consortium worked on a major evaluation effort, dissemination activities, and polishing the curriculum materials in general mathematics and algebra. The predominant theme for the curriculum was teacher-monitored independent study for each student. Two main types of material composed the individual study curriculum: an "on-line" or computer-mediated component involving student/content interaction at the computer terminal and an "off-line" component consisting of self-study in a variety of modes, such as workbooks, filmstrips, puzzles, games, and textbooks. Both the general mathematics and the algebra material was designed to appeal to urban youth. The course development, summative evaluation, and a cost analysis of the system are presented along with summaries of the courses and the materials prepared for them. (JY)
