مستخلص: A wide variety of counseling techniques based on behavioral principles have been described. While the therapeutic advantages of these techniques have been demonstrated, there is limited evidence to suggest that systematic procedures have been developed to train people to use these techniques. The proposed discrimination model is based on individualized training procedures that include: operationally defined objectives; a variety of learning activities; criterion-referenced evaluation; established levels of performance; opportunity for remediation; and self-pacing. Discrimination learning involves training the prospective counselor to differentiate behaviors in three areas. The first includes self development or the ability of the trainee to discriminate the potential effects of his facilitating or interfering behaviors on client behavior. The second area involves developing and expanding trainee's response repertoire of skills, techniques, or counseling strategies. The third area focuses on developing the trainee's ability to discriminate the consequences of his behavior on client behavior. Elaborate training procedures for each area are proposed. Implications for training validity and accountability are discussed. Methodological suggestions for research on training behavioral counselors are presented. (Author)
