مستخلص: This research evaluates the role of urban universities in economic growth. The study employed inherently rich data from IPEDS to create a panel dataset aggregated at the county level for 1065 colleges and universities in the Middle Atlantic region of the US. Using linear regression analysis, this study found that increases in expenditure per student in full-time enrollment are positively associated with increases in income per capita in the local area. Estimates from this study indicate that, on average, a one percent increase in spending per full-time enrollment increases the local income per capita by about 0.06 percent overall and by 0.10 percent in urban area universities between 2003 and 2020. In addition, this research finds that when education attainment is considered, the impact of university expenditure on income is significantly reduced but not diminished. Besides, the effect of urban university expenditure on income remains positive and significant when county and year fixed effects are considered. Furthermore, this research observes that reduction in federal funds often results in a shift in the burden of university finance to enhanced endowment activities and tuition increases, as evident during the post-recession of 2008-2009. Overall, this research observes that universities in general have a consistently positive impact on income from expenditure and human capital perspectives. The positive outcomes from university expenditure on incomes suggest that universities have a potential link to local economic outcomes.
