مستخلص: African American males attain post-secondary degrees less than their female and white male counterparts, especially at predominately White (PWIs) and Hispanic serving institutions (HSIs). These institutions are reported as having more racism, less cultural opportunities, and less satisfying student and faculty interaction. Some research surrounding African American male attainment is deficit focused, which highlights the systemic barriers these males experience at PWIs and HSIs. Whereas, anti-deficit perspective highlights the behaviors and beliefs implemented to persist. The purpose of this research project was to understand the lived experiences of African America males attending a PWI or HSI persist to attainment. The four theories used were African American male theory, Black Male adult learner success theory, Bronfenbrenner's bioecological systems theory, and Heidegger's hermeneutic circle. Data from this project was collected through interview questions and captured eight male's lived experiences. The data was transcribed, inductive coded, along with thematic analysis yielded themes to each research question. There were three research questions. First, the motivation to attain was linked with access to financial aid to assists with living expenses, salary improvement, building financial wealth, and familial knowledge on navigating the academic process. Secondly, African American males were self-aware and reflexive about the impact of their decisions to attain on family and the overall African American male population. Finally, African American males had a desire to connect with African ancestry, wanted history to extend beyond the slavery narrative, and believed both African and African Americans experienced racism.
