In this article, several types of power are described and most are relevant to libraries and librarians. It is noted that libraries are not immune to the interplay of the forces of power. This appears at odds with the ambience of an organization devoted to the dissemination of information and the preservation of knowledge. Yet even the patron is part of the power system. The interaction of people in any setting entails the subtleness of power, therefore it is inevitably present in the library. Hence, the librarian's position and title signify legitimate power and authority generally recognized throughout the organization. There may be a disagreement as to the precise scope of this power and authority, but it is usually adequate for solving problems within the library. |
