مستخلص: The Toronto Mechanic's Institute, which operated from the late 1830's until 1883, was a non-traditional educational institution whose goal was to educate working men. An idea transplanted from England, the institute was part of a movement that proved popular and successful in all the British colonies. It was envisioned as a place free from religious or political strife. It offered social and cultural activities to citizens of the city, combining lectures and evening classes with a library and reading room. For much of its history, it struggled with debt and financial crises. INSET: A Publishing Boom.
