That the library system can be observed and described as a social functional system considering the systems theoretical instruments, some basics terms must be explained briefly. Afterwards, information society is determined in detail as a social framework of the current development. Furthermore, it will be discussed which contours has a library system in a systems theoretical sense and which findings are able to produce such an approach. Of course, the subsequent outline offers no more than an impulse that should be proceeded by a thorough elaboration of a theory of the library system which would uncover the potential of a systems theoretical view of the library reality. Damit das Bibliothekssystem als gesellschaftliches Funktionssystem unter Berücksichtigung des systemtheoretischen Instrumentariums beobachtet und beschrieben werden kann, werden zunächst einige Grundlagen und theoriespezifische Begriffe kurz erläutert. Im Anschluss wird Informationsgesellschaft als sozialer Rahmen der aktuell überschaubaren Entwicklung näher bestimmt. Schließlich geht es um die Frage, welche Konturen ein systemtheoretisch durchdrungenes Bibliothekssystem besitzt und welche Erkenntnisgewinne mit einer solchen Annäherung zu gewinnen wären. Selbstverständlich bietet der nachfolgende Aufriss nicht mehr als einen äußerst knappen Impuls, dem die gründliche Ausarbeitung einer Theorie des Bibliothekssystems folgen könnte, aus der erst das tatsächliche Erkenntnispotenzial eines systemtheoretischen Blicks auf die bibliothekarische Wirklichkeit sichtbar würde.
