The article examines the common genre and format transformations in different kinds of manuscripts in the manuscript archives of New England. The authors looks at the presence of literary culture in almost four thousand diary volumes, letters, scrapbooks, commonplace books, albums and account books by residents of New England living between 1828 and 1861. They focused on two books, "Literary Dollars and Social Sense" and "Everyday Ideas." By examining the form or genre of these documents, one can observe the structural relationship between writing as a practice and lived experience. |
